If you've seen headlines about lead turning up in protein powder and felt a little uneasy scooping your next shake, you're not overreacting. Recent independent testing found that a majority of popular protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes contained more lead in a single serving than food-safety experts consider safe to consume daily — and some products came in at multiple times that limit. Here's what's actually going on, and how to make sense of it without tossing your entire supplement shelf in the trash.
Why is there lead in protein powder at all?
Protein powder doesn't start out with lead added to it — nobody's putting it there on purpose. The issue traces back to the raw ingredients. Whey and dairy-based proteins come from milk, and the cows that produce that milk graze on soil and eat feed that can carry trace heavy metals depending on the region and farming practices. Plant-based proteins like pea or rice protein tend to be worse, since plants are especially good at pulling heavy metals out of soil and concentrating them — which is part of why plant-based powders have generally tested higher for lead than dairy-based ones.

Which types of protein powder tend to test higher?

Is this actually dangerous?

- Look for brands that publish third-party testing — transparency here is a genuinely good signal, not just marketing
- Don't rely on "organic" or "natural" labels alone — those certifications don't test for heavy metals specifically
- Rotate products rather than using the exact same one daily for years, which limits how much any single source can add up
- Check current testing data before committing to a daily-use tub, since formulations and sourcing can change over time
